The novel tells of the adventures of L. Horace Holly and Leo Vincey as they travel to the east coast of Africa to track down an ancient legend regarding Vincey's ancestry. They encounter a lost race of people and a beautiful white immortal goddess named 'She-who-must-be-obeyed.'

In reprints the novel was extraordinarily popular in its time, and has remained in print to the present day. She is generally considered to be one of the classics of imaginative literature and with 83 million copies sold in 1965, one of the best-selling books of all time.
