Gravity's Angel (1992)

This short story concerns a future in which Congress continued funding for the SSC (Superconducting Super Collider), which would have been the world's largest and highest-energy (almost 3 times higher then of its European counterpart, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva) particle accelerator complex.

This of course did not happen in our timeline, where instead of gravity's angel there's a large, mostly empty tunnel beneath the Texas plains.
