The most popular of Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, The Last of the Mohicans takes place in 1757 during the French and Indian War and recounts the story of a an unarmed massacre, the kidnapping of two sisters, and their rescue by Hawkeye (Natty Bumppo) and his two Mohican friends Uncas and Chingachgook.

The abduction of the beautiful Munro sisters by hostile savages, the treachery of the renegade brave Magua, the ambush of innocent settlers, and the thrilling events that lead to the final tragic confrontation between rival war parties create an unforgettable, spine-tingling picture of life on the frontier.

The Last of the Mohicans was one of the most popular English-language novels of its time and remains still very popular today.
